Our island Sardinia is an often-overlooked gem for cyclists. While its stunning beaches and ancient Nuragic ruins draw many tourists, the island's diverse landscapes, well-maintained roads, and relatively sparse traffic make it an exceptional destination for cycling adventurers of all levels.
Sardinia with its unspoiled and wild nature is beautiful to be discovered on a bicycle. Crossing the country with his family on a bicycle or a mountain bike along the beautiful coastline is really nice.
Sardinia, thanks to favorable climatic conditions, it is an ideal training area for the ambitious cyclist and for endurance athletes but, with its charming scenery, is ideal for all cyclists who do it as a hobby and for families with children. The landscape of North Sardinia offers to all, families and demanding cyclists, paths for road or mountain bike, with short and long distances.
From challenging climbs and exhilarating descents to serene coastal rides and immersive journeys through traditional villages, Sardinia offers a cycling experience that is both demanding and deeply rewarding.
Diverse Landscapes for every cyclist
One of Sardinia's greatest assets for cyclists is its incredible variety of terrain. Starting from our town Valledoria, cyclists will find numerous opportunities:
The rugged interior around Tempio Pausania (Gallura = northern Sardinia, only a few kilometers far from our town Valledoria): For serious road cyclists and mountain bikers seeking a challenge, the mountainous heart of Sardinia, offers an abundance of steep ascents, winding roads, and breathtaking panoramic views. Here, you'll encounter climbs reminiscent of Grand Tour stages, often with very little traffic. The effort is amply rewarded with sweeping vistas of granite peaks, deep gorges, and ancient forests. Mountain bikers will find a network of challenging trails through pristine wilderness.
Amazing coastlines (towards north-east in direction Santa Teresa di Gallura/Costa Smeralda – or in direction north-west to Stintino/Alghero): Both coastlines offer spectacular cycling. The north eastern coast features a mix of rolling hills, stunning sea views, and picturesque fishing villages. The area of Tempio Pausania, in the center of Gallura, is legendary for its challenging climbs, granite rocks and cork oak forests. The north western coast, while perhaps less dramatic in its climbs, offers a more tranquil experience with expansive views of the open sea, often with the scent of Mediterranean macchia in the air. The road from Alghero south towards Bosa is a particular highlight, clinging to the cliffs with endless sea vistas.
The gentler plains and agricultural areas (Sassari - Ozieri): The large plain of Logudoro, stretching from the west to the east coast offers flatter and more direct routes, ideal for long-distance touring or for those seeking a less strenuous ride. This area is characterized by vast wheat fields, olive groves, and vineyards, providing a different perspective on the island's agricultural heartland
Road Quality and Traffic
Generally, the road quality in Sardinia is good, especially on the main provincial (SP) and regional (SS) roads. Away from the major tourist hubs in peak season, traffic is remarkably light, particularly in the interior and on many coastal routes. This allows cyclists to truly immerse themselves in the surroundings without constant worry about vehicles. However, it's always advisable to be vigilant, especially when passing through villages or on national roads near larger towns.
Best times for cycling in Sardinia
The shoulder seasons are undoubtedly the best times for cycling in Sardinia:
Spring (April-June)
This is arguably the most ideal time. The weather is pleasantly warm but not excessively hot, the landscapes are lush and green after the winter rains, and the wildflowers are in full bloom, painting the fields in vibrant colors. Tourist numbers are also lower, meaning quieter roads and more readily available accommodation.
Autumn (September-October)
Similar to spring, autumn offers excellent cycling conditions. The intense summer heat has subsided, the sea is still warm enough for a dip, and the light is particularly beautiful. Many agriturismos are harvesting their produce, offering a chance to experience local traditions.
Summer (July-August)
Summer can be very hot, especially in the interior, making long rides challenging.
Winter (November-March)
Winter can be cooler and wetter, but there are still many sunny days, particularly along the coast, making it a viable option for those seeking solitude and mild temperatures.
Where does cyclists sleep?
We offer to our guest well equipped hotel rooms and homes at Valledoria. Our homes Sa Fiorida and our hotel La Tartaruga Bianca are the ideal place to stay. We offer wifi, air conditioning, smart-tv, washing machine, a garage for bikes, small repair shop and breakfast. Most of our guests take advantage of the great benefit that, thanks to the central location of our accommodations, numerous tours can start right outside the door. We offer our guests a wide selection of cycling routes, which can also be customized to suit individual needs.
Sardinia is becoming increasingly cyclist-friendly. Many towns and cities, particularly those popular with tourists, offer bike rental services, ranging from standard road bikes to high-end carbon models and e-bikes. We are also happy to assist our guests with booking a bicycle in this regard. We ourselves rent out mountain bikes to our guests. In addition, we work with local bike rental specialists. It's often advisable to book in advance, especially during peak seasons. Bringing your own bike is also straightforward, with good connections via ferry from mainland Italy and several European airports.
Cultural Immersion and Gastronomy
Cycling in Sardinia is not just about the physical challenge; it's a gateway to the island's rich culture and renowned gastronomy. As you pedal through the countryside, you'll pass ancient Nuraghi, charming medieval towns, and isolated shepherd huts. Stopping in a small village for a coffee, a traditional Sardinian lunch (like roasted porceddu or culurgiones), or a refreshing mirto liqueur is an essential part of the experience. The warmth and hospitality of the Sardinian people are legendary, and they often welcome cyclists with genuine curiosity and kindness.
